What is the most scrapped car in the UK?

Every day 1,000s of people across the UK decide it’s time to scrap my car, but which models are most likely to turn at EMR Vehicle Recycling?

Here are the most common vehicles to be recycled over the last few years. As you would expect, it’s dominated by the most popular models around, but, for some, the reasons they made the list may be surprising.

1. Ford Focus

The Ford Focus has been a firm favourite with British drivers since it arrived in the late 1990s, and there’s a good reason why it has become such a familiar sight on UK roads. It offered the practicality of a family hatchback without feeling too big or expensive to run, making it an easy choice for commuters, families and first-time buyers moving into something larger.

Ford also had a huge dealer network and plenty of garages familiar with the cars, while replacement parts were readily available. That helped make the Focus relatively straightforward to own and maintain over the years.

As a result of being so popular, there is simply a lot of them about on the roads. When thousands of Focuses reach old age at roughly the same time, it's inevitable that plenty will eventually reach a point where repairs cost more than the car is worth.

So, seeing the Focus at the top of a scrappage list is a reflection of just how successful the model has been.

2. Vauxhall Astra

The Vauxhall Astra has been a staple of British motoring for generations. It sits in that sweet spot between a small runaround and a larger family car, offering plenty of practicality without being difficult to drive or particularly expensive to own.

Its popularity has also been helped by Vauxhall's long-standing presence in the UK. The Astra has long been widely available through dealerships and the used car market, and spare parts have generally been easy to find. That makes it a familiar choice for drivers who want something straightforward, affordable and relatively simple to fix.

Once again, popularity explains a lot about the scrappage figures. There are huge numbers of Astras out there, particularly older generations that are now naturally reaching the later stages of their lives.

Some will have been exceptionally well looked after, while others will have spent years racking up miles and accumulating wear. Eventually, an MOT failure or expensive repair becomes the point where an owner decides it's time to move on.

3. Vauxhall Corsa

If you've spent any time on British roads, you'll know just how common the Corsa is. It's one of those cars that seems to be everywhere, and that's partly because it has become such a popular first car.

The Corsa is small, easy to drive and relatively affordable to buy and run, making it particularly appealing to younger drivers and anyone looking for a practical city car. There have also been plenty of generations and versions to choose from, meaning buyers have had a huge amount of choice on the used market.

Again, that popularity is important when looking at scrappage figures. When a car has been a go-to choice for first-time drivers for years, there are naturally going to be plenty of older, high-mileage examples around, which coincidentally means we see quite a few of them ending up at the scrapyard.

4. Ford Fiesta

Much like its cousin the Ford Focus, the Ford Fiesta was one of Britain's best-loved cars for decades. It was small enough for town driving, practical enough for everyday life and affordable enough to appeal to a huge range of drivers.

And like the Corsa, it became a particularly popular first car, but it wasn't just young drivers buying them. Fiestas were popular amongst commuters, families, businesses and anyone who wanted a dependable small hatchback. Plus, like other Ford models, parts and expertise are widely available.

So when you see the Fiesta on the list of the most scrapped cars, it's worth remembering just how many were sold. There are a lot of older Fiestas still around, and so there’ll be a pretty consistent supply reaching the point where age, mileage and repair costs have caught up with them.

5. Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf has built up an almost legendary reputation in the UK. It has been around for generations and has managed to appeal to drivers looking for something that feels a little more premium than a basic family hatchback, without stepping into luxury-car territory.

Its combination of practicality, solid build quality and familiar German engineering has made it a popular choice for everything from first cars to family vehicles. There is also a huge amount of knowledge around the Golf, with garages and parts suppliers well accustomed to working on them.

That means there’s always plenty of older Golfs circulating the roads at any given time. Some will have been carefully maintained and continue to be perfectly good cars. Others have spent 15 or 20 years on the road and accumulated the wear you'd expect from a vehicle of that age. Eventually, even a Golf will reach the point where the repair bill is bigger than the car's value and so they eventually end up with us at one of our ATFs.

6. Renault Clio

The Renault Clio has been one of Europe's most recognisable small cars for decades and has been particularly popular in the UK for 30-plus years now.

Its compact size, relatively affordable running costs and wide choice of models have made it an appealing option for city drivers, new motorists and anyone who doesn't need a large family car. The Clio has also been available in everything from basic economical versions to sportier models, giving it a broad appeal.

Like the Corsa and Fiesta (and many of the cars on this list), its popularity means there are plenty of older examples still around, which ultimately means they’re another car we see quite a lot of at the scrap yard.

7. Vauxhall Zafira

The Zafira earned its place on British roads by doing something many of the smaller cars on this list couldn't. It offered not five, but seven seats without requiring the bulk of a traditional large people carrier.

Which, as you can imagine, makes it incredibly popular with families who need that flexibility. The seats can be adapted depending on whether you are carrying children, luggage, the weekly shop or a full car of passengers, giving the Zafira it’s well-earned reputation as a practical workhorse.

Many of the Zafiras now appearing in scrappage figures are getting on in years. However, there are other reasons why they may be showing up on this list a little more than other models. The Zafira B, built between 2005 and 2014, was subject to recalls following reports of fires linked to the heating and ventilation system.

The issue involved the heater blower motor and resistor, which could overheat and, in some cases, cause a fire. Of course, this didn’t affect every Zafira, and the issue was subsequently addressed through recalls and repairs. However, for affected older vehicles that are experiencing problems, it could still be another contributing factor for an owner deciding that keeping the car on the road is no longer worth the cost or hassle.

8. Mini Hatch

If you asked someone to name an iconic British car, there’s a good chance the Mini would be one of the first to spring to mind. It's one of those cars that has become part of British motoring culture, instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive shape, character and unmistakably British identity.

That popularity has carried through to the modern Mini Hatch, which combines the classic Mini character with a more modern, everyday driving experience. It's compact, stylish and fun to drive, making it a popular small car that feels a little more special than your average hatchback.

So, seeing the Mini on a list of the most scrapped cars doesn't mean it's suddenly become unpopular. Quite the opposite, actually. It's another example of how a car's popularity can ultimately contribute to the number of older examples we see reaching the end of the road.

9. Peugeot 207

The Peugeot 207 is still a really popular choice on the used car market, and it's not difficult to see why. It's a small, practical car that's easy to drive, relatively affordable to run and suits all sorts of drivers. Whether it's being used as a first car, a daily commuter or simply a runaround for getting from A to B, the 207 has a lot going for it.

When you've got a car that so many people have owned and continue to buy on the used market, you're naturally going to see more of them reaching the scrapyard, too.

The 207 appearing on this list isn't necessarily a sign that it's a car to avoid. It’s a good example of how a car can still be in demand even while older models are gradually reaching the end of their road.

10. Volkswagen Polo

If there’s one car on this list that people seem to have a soft spot for, it’s the Volkswagen Polo. It’s one of those cars that feels familiar to almost everyone. Chances are you’ve owned one or know someone who has, learnt to drive in one, had a friend with one or, like everyone else, spent years seeing them everywhere.

Part of the appeal is that the Polo gets a lot right without trying too hard. It’s compact enough to be easy around town, practical enough for everyday life and has that solid, refined feel Volkswagen is known for. It’s also a car that people tend to stick with, with plenty of drivers even choosing another Polo when it’s time for their next car.

There’s a huge support network around them, too. Parts are readily available, garages know their way around them, and there are plenty of examples on the used market, making them a relatively easy car to buy, run and maintain.

And, as with its slightly sportier sibling the Volkswagen Golf, that popularity is exactly why so many find their way to the scrapyard. When a car has been loved by so many people for so many years, there is naturally going to be an influx of them reaching the end of their lives.

So while seeing the Polo in the top 10 most scrapped cars might seem surprising for such a well-loved car at first, that's exactly why it's there!
